Original artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey.
Columba (Colum Cille),
Abbot and Missionary. Secondary Patron of Ireland. One of the 'Twelve
Apostles of Ireland' (6th Century Irish monastic saints who studied under
St. Fintan)
Feast Day 9th June.
He founded Irish monasteries at Derry, Kerry
and Kells before sailing to Iona off the Scottish Isle of Mull to form a
community. This was his base for the evangelisation of Scotland and Northern
England.
The artwork shows Columba
the missionary seafarer in a curaich or coracle, an open boat of leather.
