Translation of his relics commemorated
16th July.
A Norman nobleman related
to William the Conqueror he was appointed Bishop of Salisbury in 1078. He
helped compile the census known as the Domesday Book and was present at the
council of Sarum when the King was presented with its results.
Osmund helped complete
the cathedral for the See of Salisbury in Old Sarum and founded the cathedral
chapter of canons and a school for clerics, these became the norm in English
cathedrals. He also drew together the books governing liturgical use for the
diocese including the rite of the Mass and Divine Office, the so called Sarum
Use or liturgy on which the first Book of Common Prayer was based.
Osmund was a keen
collector of manuscripts for the cathedral library and also copied and bound
books as well as authoring a life of St. Aldhelm. He died in 1099 and was
buried in the cathedral his body and tomb were translated to the new cathedral
at Salisbury in 1226.
