Edmund Campion. Jesuit Priest. Martyr. 1540 -
1581.
Feast Days:
4th May with the 40 Martyrs of England & Wales
1st December, the date of his execution at Tyburn.
Patron Saint of the British Jesuit Province.
Born in the shadow of St. Paul's Cathedral,
London he was educated at Christ's Hospital School and Oxford University
becoming a tutor and Fellow there. He impressed Queen Elizabeth I when he made
an address to her. Lord Burghley described him as 'one of the diamonds of
England'. He took orders as a Deacon in the Anglican Church.
Campion gave up his
position and feted lifestyle when he felt called to become a Catholic,
travelling first to Dublin and Douai. He became a Jesuit in Rome & taught
in Prague before he was ordained priest.
Campion travelled in
disguise to England in 1580 in support of the Jesuit mission to England. He
preached and ministered to Catholics secretly and wrote in support of the Faith
before his arrest and torture in the Tower of London and execution on a charge
of treason at Tyburn with Fr. Alexander Bryant SJ & Fr. Ralph
Sherwin.
Many schools and colleges
are named in his honour recognising his faith and his academic prowess as student
and teacher.
