Adrian (Hadrian) of Canterbury. Benedictine Abbot.
Feastday: 9th January.
Adrian was born in north Africa. Considering himself unworthy to accept the role as Archbishop of Canterbury from the Pope he agreed to accompany St.Theodore, who was chosen in his stead, to Canterbury as an adviser.
Theodore made Adrian abbot of SS. Peter and Paul Benedictine monastery in Canterbury which was later re-named St. Augustine's.
Adrian established it as a flourishing monastic school for scripture, languages, science and arts, it became a centre of excellence for English learning. Adrian taught there for 39 years until his death on 9th January 710.
