St. Monica of Hippo c.331 - 387.
Born in Thagaste (now Algeria). She was
a Christian given in marriage to a pagan, Patricius. Despite her difficult home
life Monica kept her faith and continued to pray for her family. Both her
husband and mother in law eventually became Christians.
Monica is best known as mother to
Augustine of Hippo who led a profligate lifestyle to the dismay of his mother.
Her example and persistent prayer, together with the influence of St. Ambrose
of Milan, eventually brought him to baptism. Augustine is honoured as one of
the great saints and teachers of the Church, the life of his mother is recorded
in his famous 'Confessions'.
They are celebrated close together, as
they remained in life, St. Monica's feastday is 27th August the day before St.
Augustine's on 28th August.
