St. Cecilia - Roller Banner RB764
Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Cecilia, Martyr.
Feast Day 22nd November.
Although there are few facts known about her
life she is thought to have been a young Roman noble woman who lived in the 2nd
or 3rd century. She has been venerated as a martyr and saint from the earliest
centuries, her feast day celebrated from at least the 4th century. Her name
appears in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I). It is thought that the
expression that she 'sang to God in her heart', eventually led to her being
painted playing an organ, for this she is known as the patron saint of
musicians.
