Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey
Bernard. Abbot. Doctor of the Church.
c.1090 - 1153. Feast day 20th August.
Born to a nobe family near Dijon, France.
He joined the monastery at Citeaux,
established to embrace austerity and poverty, together with four brothers and a
group of friends. Within three years he established a new monastery at
Clairvaux in the modern day Champagne-Ardenne region which flourished under his
leadership. Many more Cistercian houses were founded from Clairvaux in his
time.
Bernard was a holy and learned man.
Despite suffering ill health, compounded by his own severe regime,
he was a man of both mystical comtemplation and action. He spoke out
about injustice and corruption in state and Church life and also wrote many
inspirational books.
He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1830 and is referred to as
'the last of the Fathers'.
“What we love we shall grow to resemble.” - Bernard of Clairvaux.
