Elements of Creation 2: Air/Wind - Banner

Artwork by the Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey, faithfully reproduced by Brother Richard Roy S.C.

Banner dimensions are 116cm x 61cm (46" x 24")

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2)

God breathes life into Adam:
Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7)

The central section of the banner shows the story from the Book of Kings where the prophet Elijah meets God at Horeb:
He said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.’ Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. (1 Kings 19:11-13)

In the next section of the banner the artist has drawn on her background as a Benedictine and has depicted a scene from the Dialogues of St Gregory. The two figures are St Benedict and St Scholastica. Each year St Benedict would visit St Scholastica at her monastery and they would spend their time in spiritual conversation. On one occasion, St Scholastica, eager to prolong the conversation, begs St Benedict not to leave. St Benedict knows that he is bound, in obedience, to return to his monastery. St Scholastica then prays and there is a sudden burst of lightning and thunder, accompanied by such a downpour that St Benedict is unable to return to his monastery.
They spent the entire night together and both of them derived great profit from the holy thoughts they exchanged about the interior life. (Dialogues of St Gregory Ch 33)

The final section of the banner shows the coming of the spirit at Pentecost:
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. (Acts 2:1)
