Cardinal Basil Hume

Westminster.
Born George Hume in
Newcastle upon Tyne 1923, died London, 17th June 1999. Buried in Westminster
Cathedral.

Regarded as a man of
great humility and deep spirituality informed by his Benedictine calling, his
contribution to the pastoral life of the nation was acknowledged by the
awarding of the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II shortly before his death.
He is particularly
remembered for his work with the homeless and young people at risk,
establishing the Cardinal Hume Centre in 1986, and opening up Cathedral Hall, Westminster
to those sleeping rough.
He authored several
books on the spiritual life.
