St. Luke - Roller Banner RB1135B
Artwork from a frieze of the Four Evangelists by
Leopold Bruckner.
Luke, Evangelist.
Feast Day 18th
October.
He lived in the first
century, possibly a Greek from Antioch, who was trained as a doctor (he is
refered to by Saint Paul as 'our beloved physician'). He was a gentile and a
Christian convert and a disciple of Saint Paul. He wrote a Gospel and the Acts
of the Apostles. Tradition suggests that he may have had direct contact with
Mary, Mother of Jesus, he certainly had time and opportunity to meet
those who knew Jesus personally.
His Gospel, written from
the perspective of a non-Jew, emphasises that it is a 'Universal Gospel'
because Jesus died for the salvation of all. It has also been called the
'Gospel of Mercy' for its references to Jesus' compassion & care for the
sick, the marginalised and sinners.
Your friends,
O Lord, shall make known the glorious splendour of your reign Ps144: v12 Psalm from the Mass on the Feast of St Luke.
