'God's ways are not our ways.' (see Isaiah 55:8).
Most probably it was the Prodigal's memory of a loving,
understanding father that helped him to carry out his brave decision to return
home and admit his fault. And his hopes were fulfilled beyond his wildest
dreams. Twice the father gives his reason for this huge celebration: this son
was dead and has come back to life. Jesus identifies with the sinner-son. He
too was dead and came back to life, and we all may follow him there.
