Elements of Creation 1: Earth - Banner

Author/Artist: The Benedictine Sisters of Turvey Abbey

Artwork reproduced by Brother Richard Roy

Banner dimensions are 46" x 24"(Landscape).

This banner explores earth in the Bible, beginning with the account of creation in the Book of Genesis...

And God said, ‘Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.’ (Genesis 1:6-11)

- Through the earth, God provides for his creatures:
God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. (Genesis 1:29-30)

- The middle section of the panel shows the Parable of the Sower, where the earth represents the soil of our hearts and we are challenged to bear fruit:
A sower went out to sow his seed... Some fell into good soil and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold. (Luke 8:5,8)

- The final section represents Christ laid in the earth and raised to new life through the Spirit. In the Letter to the Romans, St Paul writes that, through Baptism, we too have been laid in the tomb with Christ and so will be raised to new life:
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:3-4)

The printing process used is dye sublimation and we are now re-producing all our images onto a new heavier weight material which is specifically formulated to ensure that the quality of the original artwork is accurately and faithfully reflected. The colours are fade resistant under normal lighting conditions. All banners are supplied with a hanging cord, dowels and end caps top and bottom. An extra depth of approx. 12" should be allowed when measuring to allow for hanging cord.
